According to the Del Mar Stable Notes for November 12th, the 2016 Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar is among the major targets for 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome, who on Saturday at Los Alamitos is scheduled to post the second timed workout of his much-anticipated comeback.

After being sidelined earlier this year with cannon bone bruising, California Chrome was rested at Taylor Made Farm before shipping back to Los Alamitos, where he has been based throughout his career with trainer Art Sherman. Last Saturday, California Chrome breezed a quarter-mile at Los Alamitos, with the time–according to some sources–being an easy :25 seconds.

“He’s coming back quick; if there are no problems he’ll be ready by January,” Sherman was quoted as saying. “I’ll be up there for the work. He’ll probably go another quarter mile and gallop out three-eighths like he did before, but gallop out a little stronger this time.”

The first major race on California Chrome’s agenda is the 2016 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) at Meydan in Dubai, a race in which California Chrome finished second earlier this year.

“When he gets back from Dubai, the Pacific Classic is the next one we’ll be pointing for,” Sherman said.

In the Pacific Classic, it’s possible that California Chrome could face the remarkable mare Beholder, who won the Pacific Classic this year and is expected to remain in training for a 2016 campaign.
