Catch a Flight Sore After Workout, Skips Awesome Again Stakes

According to a report in the Santa Anita Stable Notes for September 24th, three-time graded stakes winner Catch a Flight was not entered in Saturday’s Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) because he was sore in the aftermath of a five-furlong workout on September 22nd.

“It doesn’t appear to be serious,” trainer Richard Mandella was quoted as saying, “but it was enough for me not to enter.”

In his last start, Catch a Flight finished second in the Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. I) and was expected to be among the favorites in the nine-furlong Awesome Again, a “Win and You’re In” prep race for the October 31st Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Keeneland. Catch a Flight has been nominated to the October 3rd Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) at Belmont Park, and could potentially start in that race if he recovers quickly from his soreness.
