Good afternoon, everyone!
As the post position draw for the Kentucky Derby approaches, I’ve been pondering which post position might be the best for Dortmund. Being a large horse with great early speed, but without much acceleration and turn-of-foot, I think drawing inside could be a major disadvantage. If he gets stopped in traffic early on and isn’t able to utilize his long stride, I think that could really compromise his chances.
So I have a question for any and all to answer–which post position would be most ideal for Dortmund? Would post ten be fine, or would it be better to be even farther outside? Would post twenty be too wide, or would the guarantee that he would be able to stay out of traffic be a positive?
I look forward to reading your thoughts!

I’m late, I know. In a way Dortmund reminds me of Lawyer Ron. Incredible early speed, absolutely no turn-of-foot. I expected him to pack it in at the top of the stretch so kudos for fighting through the entire stretch. Never heard of Firing Line’s damsire, didnt expect him to stay with AP. Victor rode AP early and often, I’m very surprised it played out like that and that he had enough to hold off FL. I didn’t cash a single ticket, but it was well worth seeing Andy Beyer’s pick finish dead last. Keep up the great work Keelerman!

Hi Kevin! I like your comparison of Dortmund to Lawyer Ron — there are definitely some striking similarities!
Indeed, Dortmund fought on well in the homestretch, and I think his effort was particularly notable considering that the rail may not have been the place to be at Churchill on Derby day. With a cutback in distance for the Preakness, over what will likely be a less tiring racetrack, I think Dortmund might have a shot to turn the tables on American Pharoah.
