Frosted, Keen Ice Breeze for Belmont Stakes

Frosted and Keen Ice, a pair of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) starters that are targeting the June 6th Belmont Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park, turned in workouts this morning in preparation for the third jewel of the Triple Crown.

Frosted, who rallied from behind to finish fourth in the Derby, worked a half-mile in :47.64 at Belmont Park. His breeze was the fastest of thirty-one morning workouts at that distance. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and owned by Godolphin Racing, Frosted is not yet a definite starter for the Belmont Stakes, but today’s workout suggests that the colt has emerged from the Derby in very good shape could be a major contender in the Belmont.

At Churchill Downs, Derby seventh-place finisher Keen Ice breezed five furlongs in 1:01 4/5. The son of Curlin is conditioned by Dale Romans, who trained First Dude to a third-place finish in the 2010 Belmont Stakes. Owned by Donegal Racing, Keen Ice will likely be a longshot in the Belmont, but has a strong pedigree for the twelve-furlong distance and could be an overlooked contender.
