With five weeks remaining until the October 31st Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Keeneland, Travers Stakes (gr. I) winner Keen Ice is getting a week off from serious training, and did not turn in a timed workout over the weekend.

The son of Curlin most recently upset Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes on August 29th, and due to the amount of time between the Travers and the Breeders’ Cup Classic, trainer Dale Romans has decided to give Keen Ice a short break before gearing him up for the Breeders’ Cup.

“He’s got a long ways to go,” Romans was quoted as saying in the Churchill Downs Barn Notes for September 26th. “Since we decided not to run him in between [the Travers and Breeders’ Cup Classic], we’re going to give him an easy week this week and we’ll get him cranked out next week. We’ll probably just work every week up to the Breeders’ Cup.”

Keen Ice is one of several major Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders that are expected to train up to the race, including American Pharoah and Woodward Stakes (gr. I) winner Liam’s Map.
